As it starts to warm up, it’s time to start getting back outside to enjoy the great outdoors again.

While you work on getting the garden back in order, it is a good idea to get the youngsters involved and to celebrate spring B&M, which has a branch in the Vancouver Quarter,  have come up with great gardening activities for children to get inspired.

It doesn’t have to be complicated, kids’ gardening ideas don’t need to be complicated, just fun. Little people love using their imaginations and getting messy. Putting a Saturday afternoon aside to plant seeds and spend tome outdoors is a great way to enjoy quality time together.

Home-made bird feeders

Gardening activities for children rarely get messier, or more fun, than making these bird feeders. You will need: birdseed, gelatine, mixing bowl, biscuit cutters, ribbons and a foil-covered baking tray.

1: Make the gelatine by adding boiling water to the powder in the bowl (keep the little ones away for this bit!). Tip the birdseed into the bowl and you want roughly the same amount of each. Mix well.

2: Put your biscuit cutters on the tray and pour the mixture into the shapes. Put a straw into the cutter too so you can thread  ribbons later.

3: Put the tray in the fridge for a few hours and leave them to dry overnight.

4: Following day – push the birdfeeders out of the cutters and tie a ribbon through the hole left by the straw.

5: Hang them in the garden.
